Aero Testing

At Branden Scheel Racing, we believe the best results come from testing in real-world conditions. That’s why our aero testing services, powered by the state-of-the-art Gibli G10 aero sensor, are conducted outdoors and provide immediate feedback on savings and losses of each variable tested in real world conditions.

What Is aero testing and why should you do it?

DSC_0824.jpg

"Aero testing" refers to the process of measuring and analyzing the aerodynamic properties of an object, like a bicycle or a car, to determine how efficiently it moves through the air, usually done in a wind tunnel and focusing on minimizing drag by optimizing its shape and design; essentially, it's a test to see how "slippery" an object is in the wind, often measured by its "CdA" (coefficient of drag multiplied by frontal area) value. Very small changes in setup can produce extremely different results for aerodynamics. If you want to ensure your setup is as fast as it possibly can be, aero testing is how you do that.

Why should you do it?

Throughout the aero testing process, every change you make is quantified to a real number. No more guessing at how much time you are saving by reducing your stack, or changing helmets. We provide exact numbers on watt/time savings for every variable we test. This also allows for athletes looking for the best of the best equipment to not waste money buying everything they can to try it out. We will provide all sorts of equipment for you to try BEFORE you purchase, and then you can go home and buy with confidence in the difference each piece will make in your overall CDA.

In a perfect world, we would all go to the wind tunnel, and test every change we make to our bikes in order to confirm we are optimizing our setup. The problem is, not many of us can shell out $1,000/hour in testing costs. That is where our outdoor testing comes in! It is more affordable, and provides just as valuable results throughout the process.

What We Offer:

  • Real-World Aero Analysis: By testing outdoors, we provide results that reflect actual riding conditions, ensuring your setup is optimized for real-life performance.

  • Customizable Testing Options: We can evaluate any variables you’d like, including stack, reach, bottle placement, wheel selection, helmet selection, and more. Whatever your goals, we’ll tailor the testing to your needs.

  • Access to Premium Equipment: Don’t have the ideal gear? No problem. We offer a selection of helmets, wheels, and cockpit components for you to test, so you can find the perfect setup without guesswork.

  • Convenient Locations: Depending on time of year and dates you want to test, we can test in Tucson, AZ, or Boulder, CO.

How do we test?

Testing will be a series of efforts, around 5k in length at race pace. We will begin by setting a baseline with your current setup, and then each test we will change 1 variable and check the results from the change. We will continue to test and retest various equipment and setups throughout the process and find the optimal setup for you!

The aero sensor will pair with your bikes power meter, as well as a speed sensor. It is a requirement of this service to have a properly working, dual sided or crank based power meter. We can provide a pair of pedals for you to use during the test if you need them. We have both Wahoo Powerlink pedals and Garmin Rally pedals for use.
